a triangle lives here

v-fin

I am, once again, regretfully realizing I didn't take a before picture to help illustrate the change, but then realizing: I would be less happy if I strictly adhered to such a principal

One of the Things in a gundam model is the little Vs on the robot heads have bits of extra plastic at the tips--are they for stability/durability? Aiding the extrusion in the mold? To provide a contact point for the sprue that will be less damaging if cut wrong? To protect eyeballs?[1]

The result of this Thing is another Thing modelers do: clipping/filing the extra plastic off to make the fins look nice. I tried doing this on the Calamity Gundam and just did it again on the guy I'm working on.[2] It's nerve wracking since they're small and delicate, but the result is real satisfying and it adds another little opportunity for methodical, intricate, small* work, which: I adore

a tiny grey 'V' of plastic balanced on some fingers. Both tips smoothly taper to a fine pointa second angle of a grey v fin, showing there is no plastic bulging from the rear side of each point

  1. this is the one I see cited a lot and every time I go ?????? There are so many other pointy bits and these are all branded as 15+, there is no way it is for avoiding sharp poky eye injuries ↩︎

  2. HG Kimaris Trooper, who is a knightbug whose legs transform so it's a FLYING CENTAUR knightbug ↩︎
