decaf

since apparently it is Bulk Food season[1], I just unloaded my bulk decaf order and I thought I'd Post about that too:

I have been buying Centri coffee's decaf Ethepian for several years now; it's got the distinction of a) being a consistently good and consistently available decaf, b) being a natural process decaf, and c) being an honest and actual medium roast. The first one is vital, the second one is nice, and the third point is a delight especially paired with the second point--natural processes tend to end up pretty tea like to me when light roasted,[2] and medium gives them more body without obscuring any of the fruit-forward flavors the drying with fruit on imparts. It's also a pretty good price for a Nice coffee.

I was buying it two bags at a time to get free shipping, but then they (justifiably) bumped their threshold for that so I did the math and worked out buying a 5lbs bag was a good deal for me. A five pounder lasts around 3/4 of a year for us, so I freeze it in smaller bags and pull one of those out every so often. I don't remember why I landed on putting 420 grams in each quart freezer bag, but it's Funny so I continue to do so. I end up with 5 full bags and one partial, mark them with weight, date of freeze, what coffee it is, and x/6 so I can remember to order again when I see I'm pulling the sixth bag out of the freezer.

and then I get to drink a lil cup of decoffer every day 😌

  1. honestly it feels like we just got thru the Real Bulk Food Season; I'm pretty sure Em canned over 100 jars of tomatoes, sauce, and jams during our harvest; her dad has a Thing for planting One Million Tomatoes and Em likes to can and I like to use home canned tomatoes and sauce the whole year ↩︎

  2. at best; a lot of times they feel pretty sour no matter what you do to brew them ↩︎
